Building Material Testing

Every building starts as a set of materials, and every material arrives with a claim: this concrete reaches this strength, this bar resists this load, this membrane keeps water out. In Ajman, heat, humidity, salt air and sandy soil test those claims hard. Therefore, builders, consultants and suppliers rely on building materials testing to confirm that each delivery performs as promised. At METS Laboratories in Ajman, we test construction materials and report the results clearly, so your team can approve materials with evidence.

What is Building Materials Testing?

Building materials testing, also called construction materials testing, is the laboratory evaluation of the materials that make up a structure. It checks that concrete, steel, aggregates, blocks, soil, asphalt, waterproofing and coatings meet the project specification and recognised standards such as ASTM, BS, ISO and EN, along with the requirements of the local authority.

  • Physical tests: We measure strength, density, size, absorption and thickness.
  • Chemical tests: In addition, we check composition, chlorides and sulphates.
  • Durability tests: We study how materials hold up against water, heat and wear.

Importance of Building Materials Testing

Materials decide how long a building stands and how safely it performs.

  • Structural safety: Weak concrete or steel can threaten lives long after handover.
  • Specification compliance: Consultants and authorities expect test reports before they approve materials.
  • Durability: Salts, moisture and heat shorten the life of poorly made materials.
  • Cost control: Moreover, catching a bad batch early costs far less than repairs or rework.
  • Supplier checks: Test data lets contractors compare suppliers on facts.

Materials We Test and the Tests Performed on Them

Each material fails differently, so each one needs its own set of tests.

Concrete

Concrete is the backbone of most buildings, and its quality depends on the mix, the placing and the curing. In the UAE’s heat, a mix can lose workability fast or dry too quickly. For this reason, we test concrete both fresh and hardened, so you see how it behaves on site and how strong it becomes.

Tests on Concrete

  • Slump test: It measures the workability of fresh concrete (BS EN 12350-2).
  • Cube compressive strength: We crush cubes at set ages, usually 7 and 28 days, to confirm the design strength (BS EN 12390-3).
  • Density: It shows whether the concrete is compacted properly (BS EN 12350-6).
  • Water penetration: It shows how well the concrete resists moisture entering from outside (BS EN 12390-8).
  • Chloride content: Salt can corrode embedded steel, so we measure it (BS 1881-124).

Cement and Mortar

Cement binds the mix together, and mortar holds blocks in place. Poor cement or a weak mortar mix affects everything built on it.

Tests on Cement and Mortar

  • Setting time: It shows how quickly the paste hardens (ASTM C191: using the Vicat needle)
  • Fineness: It affects strength gain and workability (ASTM C204, BS EN 196-6)
  • Mortar compressive strength: We crush mortar prisms to check their strength (BS EN 196-1, ASTM C109/C109M)

Aggregates

Sand and gravel make up most of the concrete volume. Dirty, weak or badly graded aggregates reduce strength and durability, even when the cement is perfect.

Tests on Aggregates

  • Sieve analysis: It shows the grading, or size distribution (BS EN 933-1).
  • Abrasion resistance: The Los Angeles test shows how well aggregate resists wear (BS EN 1097-2).
  • Water absorption and density: They help in mix design (BS EN 1097-6).
  • Chloride and sulphate content: These salts can attack steel and concrete (BS EN 1744-1, EN 206).

Reinforcing Steel

Steel bars carry the tension that concrete cannot. A bar that is too weak, too brittle or underweight puts the whole structure at risk.

Tests on Reinforcing Steel

  • Tensile test: It measures yield strength, tensile strength and elongation (Steel for the reinforcement and prestressing of concrete β€” BS EN ISO 15630-1:2019, Steel for the reinforcement of concrete β€” BS 4449:2005+A3:2016)
  • Bend and re-bend test: It checks that the bar does not crack when formed on site (ASTM A370 or ASTM E290 ISO 15630-1, ISO 6935-2, or BS 4449)
  • Mass per metre: It confirms that the bar has the stated size and weight.

Blocks and bricks

Blocks and bricks form walls, so their strength and moisture behaviour affect stability and comfort.

Tests on Blocks and Bricks

  • Compressive strength: It shows the load each unit can carry (BS EN 772-1).
  • Water absorption: It shows how much moisture the unit takes in.
  • Dimensions and density: They confirm quality and consistency.

Waterproofing and Roofing Membranes

Membranes protect structures from water. A thin or weak membrane can fail early, and leaks often hide until damage is serious.

Tests on Waterproofing and Roofing Membranes

  • Thickness and mass per unit area: They confirm the product matches its data sheet (EN 1849-1).
  • Tensile strength: It shows how well the membrane resists pulling forces.
  • Sampling and testing of roofing felts: We follow ASTM D146 for these products.

METS Laboratories for Building Materials Testing

Dependable results rely on representative samples, correct specimen preparation and clear reporting, and we focus on all three.

  • Project-led testing: We start from your specification, not from a generic list.
  • Waterproofing know-how: Our Ajman laboratory works within accredited scopes covering ASTM D146 and EN 1849-1 for roofing and waterproofing materials.
  • Clear reports: Results sit beside the limits, so approvals move faster.
  • Local laboratory: Our Ajman team shortens delivery time for UAE sites.

METS Laboratories in Ajman carries out building and construction materials testing to determine quality, durability and compliance with international standards such as ASTM, BS, ISO and EN, supporting the specifications of local authorities and project consultants.

Conclusion

Building materials testing shows whether the materials on your site match the claims on the delivery note. Therefore, it protects safety, supports approvals and prevents expensive rework. Test each delivery against your specification and keep the reports with the project file. Share your material list with METS Laboratories, and we will recommend the right test plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many concrete cubes should I test?
Ans: The number depends on your specification and the volume poured. Follow the project spec or the standard it names.

2. Why do chlorides and sulphates matter in concrete?
Ans: Chlorides can corrode reinforcing steel, and sulphates can attack concrete. Both shorten the life of a structure, especially in coastal areas.

3. Can I test a material after it is already installed?
Ans: Sometimes. Cores from concrete or samples from installed products can be tested, but results depend on how the sample was taken.
