Mask Testing

Middle East Testing Services LLC (METS Labs) offers a comprehensive set of tests for surgical face masks and general-use medical masks. These tests are essential to ensuring performance properties are validated to support marketing label claims and to classify these mask types.

Surgical masks intended to provide liquid barrier protection must meet fluid resistance testing (liquid barrier performance) consistent with standard ASTM F1862 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Face Masks to Penetration by Synthetic Blood and meet Class I or Class II flammability requirement per 16 CFR 1610 (unless labeled with a recommendation against use in the presence of high intensity heat source or flammable gas).

Below are the tests done in the masks

1. Bacterial or Viral Filtration Efficiency
2. Breathability
3. Microbial cleanliness (Bioburden)
4. Penetration of synthetic blood/Splash resistance test
5. Breathing resistance or differential pressure
6. Penetration of synthetic blood/Splash resistance test
7. Penetration by particulates
8. Flammability

Below is the standard referred for the mask testing

  • BSEN 14683-2019
  • ASTM F 2101
  • ASTM F 1862
  • ASTM F 2299
  • 16CFR part 1610
